The choices for both are: Logo and label, Logo only, Menu icon and label, Menu icon only, Label only. The label itself is set on the Taskbar section.

The logo shows at 16px. A simple mark reads; a wordmark won't.

Cart icon in the top-right corner

on

Pinned to the same corner on every page, with the item count. Computers only — phones keep the cart in the taskbar. While it's on, a Cart shortcut in your desktop icons is hidden on computers, so there's only one cart

Your own icon — a bag, a box. Transparent PNG, 64 × 64 or larger, drawn simply; it shows at 48px

The speaker in the tray. See below

Start-up sound when entering

on

A dreamy start-up swell that opens up wide and bright, bells rising into it, as a shopper presses Enter on the enter page, even with the other sounds off

Your own start-up sound

empty

Paste a link to your own MP3 to play it on Enter instead. See below

Cascaded (each a step down and right), Scattered, or Stacked

Your own start-up sound

  1. In Shopify admin, go to Content → Files and press Upload files. Pick your MP3 (keep it under 5 seconds and under 300 KB so it starts instantly).

  2. When it finishes uploading, press the link icon next to it to copy its address.

  3. Go to Online Store → Themes → Customize → Theme settings → Shell and paste it into Your own start-up sound.

  4. Save. Your sound now plays on Enter instead of the built-in one. Clear the box to go back.

Start-up sound when entering still has to be ticked.

Opening… dialog

On by default. The first time a shopper opens each window in a visit, a small box — Opening SHOP.EXE… with a blue progress bar — runs for a moment before the window appears, the beat a real machine took to load a program. It's once per window per visit, never for the window that opens by itself, and never for shoppers who've asked their device for less motion.

Setting
Default

Show an Opening… dialog

on

How long

0.3 s

0.2 to 1.5 seconds, in tenths, so nobody waits long

Recycle Bin

Whatever a shopper takes out of the cart lands in the Recycle Bin, and the bin's icon fills up — drag a row from the cart window onto the bin, or press Remove. Click the bin to open it: everything in it is listed with Restore, which puts it back in the cart, and Empty Recycle Bin clears it for good. It's kept on the shopper's own browser; nothing reaches your admin.

System sounds

A speaker in the taskbar's tray, struck through in red: sounds are always off until the shopper turns them on, and their choice is remembered. On phones the tray has no room for it, so it's Sounds in the Start menu instead, ticked while on. Once on, every mouse click clicks — a recorded mouse button. On top of that, the moments that mean something have their own sound:

When
Sound

Entering the store

A dreamy swell that opens up bright, with rising bells — plays even with sounds off, unless Start-up sound when entering is unticked

Something goes into the cart

A two-note notify

A cart goal is reached (free shipping unlocked)

A bright four-note chime

A game is won

A short flourish

An add is refused (sold out, a limit)

The bell

Something goes in the Recycle Bin / it's emptied

Paper crumpling / a bigger crunch

Sleep

A falling chord

Check out

A modem dialling out

The mouse click is a real recording. The rest are drawn by the browser as they play, in the spirit of 98's. None of them are Microsoft's recordings, which can't be shipped in a theme. Untick Offer system sounds to take the speaker away.

A small line of text just above the taskbar.

  • Show a line above the taskbar — on by default.

  • Text — © [year] [shop] by default. [year] and [shop] are filled in for you.

Start menu

  • Add "98" after the store name — on by default. The Start menu's side strip reads like the original: your name in bold, 98 in plain.
