First-Time Setup

The settings and Shopify data EXP-98 needs before it looks like the demo.

Work through these in order. The desktop is on every page, so most of this is done once.

The same seven steps are the first tab in the theme editor — Theme settings → Start here — with a link on each to the admin page it needs, so you can work through them without leaving the editor.

Every setting that depends on something elsewhere in your admin links straight to it from the theme editor — look for the blue link in the setting's help text.

1. Your logo, in Shopify

Settings → Brand in your admin, not the theme editor.

EXP-98 reads your store's own logo from there. It is the screensaver's bouncing logo when you haven't given the screensaver one of its own, and it is the logo search engines are told about.

2. Palette and wallpaper

Theme settings → Appearance and Theme settings → Wallpaper

  • Palette — seven full skins: Classic (teal and grey), Midnight, Bubblegum, Terminal, Sandstone, Rainy Day, High Contrast. Each recolours the desktop, every window and the icon set.

  • Wallpaper — an image, a video, or both. Set an image even if you use a video: it shows while the video loads and for visitors whose device asks for reduced motion.

With nothing set, the desktop is the palette's own colour — teal on Classic, as in 1998.

3. The Start menu

Taskbar section in the theme editor.

  • Menu — the Start menu's contents. It uses your Main menu unless you pick another. Menus are built in Content → Menus; nested items become submenus.

  • Start button label — "Start" by default. Change it to "Menu" or anything else.

  • Start menu spine text — the vertical strip down the side of the menu. Your store name unless you set it.

The Start button's logo is under Theme settings → Shell → Logo. It shows at 16px, so a simple mark works and a wordmark won't.

4. The desktop

The Desktop section is a list of blocks — one per icon. It ships with Shop, Collections, Search, Contact and Cart shortcuts; Video, Photos, Music and Policies launchers; a Read me window; and three of the eight games (Solitaire, Minefield and Worm — add the other five as blocks).

  • Shortcuts link anywhere. Point them at collections, pages, or other sites.

  • Read me is a text window that opens on load. On phones it sits above the icons, so it doubles as an announcement.

  • Delete the blocks you don't want. Anything you don't use simply isn't on the desktop.

See Desktop.

5. The games' reward (optional)

On the desktop, the games are just for fun: a win says You win! and nothing more. To hand out a discount, create the code under Discounts first, then set the game's Winning reveals to A discount code and type it in. Set a usage limit on it: the code is readable in the page's source by anyone who looks.

Or delete the games. See Games.

6. Music

Music section in the theme editor.

Add a Track block per song, up to 12. Each needs an audio file URL: upload the MP3 under Content → Files, copy its link, and paste it into the track. Add cover art and it is printed on the spinning disc. See Music Player.

7. Filters

The filter bar on collections and search shows the filters Shopify's Search & Discovery app is set to offer — availability and price out of the box, and colour, size, product type or anything else once you add them there. Install the app if you haven't, then choose your filters under Filters. See Collection.

8. The cart goal

The cart ships with one goal: free shipping at 100 in your store's currency. The bar only shows progress — it does not change what a shopper pays.

Make it true: set up free shipping over that amount under Settings → Shipping and delivery, or change the goal to match the rates you have. See Cart.

9. Policies

Settings → Policies in your admin. Every policy you write there appears in the desktop's Policies folder as a text file. Empty ones are left out.

10. A contact page

Create a page under Online Store → Pages with the handle contact and the template contact. The desktop's Contact shortcut points at /pages/contact, and the contact template always shows the form. See Contact.
